Why this participation project?
Curaçao’s archaeological heritage is at risk! In recent years, (illegal) land activities have been increasing, resulting in irreparable damage to archaeological sites. Mobilizing hikers and divers is therefore a crucial and sustainable approach to monitor the archaeological heritage of the island, preserving its unique legacy.
What will we be doing?
The Vigilansia di Herensia Kòrsou Project aims to actively involve volunteers in the management of the archaeological heritage. By training them to use a mobile application and deploying them as a Wardadó di Herensia or Heritage Guardian, the project seeks to empower volunteers to contribute significantly to heritage monitoring and conservation. The heritage data collected will be used for monitoring and conservation purposes.
Responsibility and ethics
Participants will be requested to sign an ethical code of conduct. This is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures that volunteers comprehend the significance of responsible and respectful behavior toward artifacts and heritage sites. Secondly, it emphasizes the importance of preserving historical contexts and maintaining the integrity of archaeological finds and structures. Thirdly, it promotes accountability and a sense of duty, enhancing the credibility and professionalism of the volunteer team. Ultimately, this ethical code reinforces a collective commitment to protect, respect, and responsibly manage the invaluable archaeological heritage for the benefit of society and future generations.
Archaeologists and volunteers working together!
The structured involvement of citizens in the preservation of archaeological sites is fundamental to combat the increasing threats posed by development and other (unauthorized) activities. Through the Vigilansia di Herensia di Kòrsou Project, we strive to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility among the community for safeguarding Curaçao’s rich archaeological heritage. By equipping volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge, we empower them to actively engage in the protection and sustainable management of our island’s unique archaeological legacy.
Together, we can make a difference, ensuring that future generations can connect with and appreciate the extraordinary history of our beloved island. Join us in this crucial mission to preserve Curaçao’s past for a brighter future!
