The inaugural training sessions of the Vigilansia di Herensia Kòrsou project were successfully completed, marking an important step toward safeguarding Curaçao’s archaeological heritage. Over three Saturdays, 25 enthusiastic participants engaged in sessions delivered in Papiamentu, English, and Dutch, led by archaeologists Claudia Kraan and Amy Victorina.
The training introduced participants to the project’s core mission: building a dedicated volunteer group to act as the eyes and ears of NAAM archaeologists. This initiative seeks to continue the exceptional work of the Archaeological Working Group (Speurneuzen), which has contributed significantly to the field over the past decade.
Key topics included ethical approaches to archaeological heritage, recognizing sites and structures, and utilizing the open-source ODK Collect app. The app, tailored for the project with assistance from Ace Suares of Kuki+Ko, equips volunteers with the skills to document and monitor heritage sites efficiently. Media support for the training was provided by BaseCreatives.
Stay tuned as this initiative continues in 2025, empowering the community to safeguard Curaçao’s rich archaeological heritage while supporting the work of NAAM archaeologists.
